Hot and kinky, yet tender as Texas barbecue.

I am a huge and shameless Joey W. Hill fan. I also love her Vampire Queen universe for its intense, dark eroticism. This book is its newest entry in that series, and it was fabulous.
One of the things I love about Joey is that she writes these delicious alpha heroes who are intensely chivalrous and take charge, yet who submit to their heroines sexually. And she makes it believable. This is a great example of that, because Quinn becomes the servant to Selene, a lovely vampire on the run from a sadistic vampire master.
The sex between the two is burn-your-eyebrows off hot and kinky, yet mixed with that is a delicious tenderness. Hill's writing, with Desiree Holt, is beautifully done, sensual, and yet clean in its rhythms, so that the reader is sucked into the world the two authors create.
I strongly recommend NIGHTFALL, along with all Hill's other delicious books. Do yourself a favor and read every one of them, because you won't be disappointed.

Fangs and cowboys and chaps, Oh Myyyy...

At a time when vampires are losing their (sorry) sparkle for me, Vampire Queen series remains the one bright light in the genre. And this is simply because Joey W. Hill can keep any storyline alive because she is a consummate and compassionate storyteller. Every story is new. Every. Time.
She and Desiree Holt are on the same wave-length for this book, because I defy anyone to pick out who wrote what bits.
This story was compelling in that both Selene and Quinn were new to the whole "Me Vamp-You Third Marked Servant" life and lifestyle and yet they both knew they could and would do this thing; for each other first, and then for themselves. Outwardly, the only person who really saw Selene's vulnerability, a fatal flaw for any vamp and especially one who pushed the envelope, was Quinn. Her ties to her very recent humanity put her in a precarious position, and only a very strong human-made-third-mark servant like Quinn, who was still getting in touch with his own inner being, could balance her.
I loved the almost mentorship Selene had with Butch, and that Quinn seemed to have with Dix. These two secondary characters have their own story to tell, as do Annette and Sam. Another plus, when a story is so character rich you can taste the possibilities.
Kudos Ms. Hill and Ms Holt. A perfect blending of the minds and the methods. Not to mention, the whole chaps and fangs thing...just sayin'...

Disappointing.

It's not a bad book but, the collaboration with Desiree Holt (no offense) has produced a novel not quite up to Ms. Hill's standards. I find myself repeatedly logging off the book to do something else because it's just not holding my interest. This is totally out of the ordinary for me with a Joey Hill novel. With every other one of Ms. Hill's novels I have been totally immersed in the characters and storyline. It's like stepping into an alternate universe and seeing, hearing, feeling everything her characters do. Unfortunately, that connection is just not there with this novel. The characters just don't have the same depth and, being superficial, don't generate the empathy I'm used to feeling with a novel by Ms. Hill. They just don't feel "real" to me the way the characters in her solo novels have. If you're as big a fan of Ms. Hill as I am, I believe you will feel let down by this collaboration. Sadly, it just is not up to her standards.
