Another winner

Well I loved this long awaited story. Since the end of Mirror of My Soul I was hoping that Joey Hill would give us more on Brendan and Chloe, and boy did she ever. Exquisitely written. This love story dances lightly on its feet around the BDSM theme of the Nature of Desire Series. With gentility, beautiful sensuality, eroticism and romance (yes romance and lots of it). Brendan and Chloe are both truly loving souls, but with much need. Like most Ms. Hill's characters they are complex and multilayered. Without giving the story away, there is a scene in a Carnival that is written with such vividness and intensity that it grips the reader right into it, completely unforgettable, while moments later in the scene it becomes so touching that it brings tears to ones eyes. Brendan is a real Knight in shining armor, ready to do battle for Chloe when she needs it or if she desires it, while feisty Chloe is more than ready to return the favor. If male/subs are thought of as weak, well Brendan has changed my opinion. There is "real strength in his gentleness" I guess that is the message.

I love Ms. Hill's philosophical and psychological way to look at BDSM

Brendan said to Chloe:
"I feel...whole, like I'm doing what I'm supposed to do. I'm on the edge of being exactly what I'm meant to be, and there's no need for anything but to be...yours. When I get completely lost under a woman's touch, her power and control, swept away, I know this is what I want most. I'll do anything for her. For you."

After a horrible attack about a year ago, Chloe suffers from panic attacks. Her sanctuary was branded. She's always been a woman full of life, joy and laughter. Her friend Gen said over a year ago:
"If anyone could live on the curve of a rainbow, it would be you."
Sadly that's gone now. During a panic attack one night, she calls a number that she's had for so many months. It's Brendan's. She met him at Marguerite's (her boss) wedding. Listening to Brendan's voice, to the easy honesty in his words, calms her tremendously. They have some hot phone sex. Besides the phone sex, they have an interesting conversation as well.
"Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength."
Chloe is feeling things she's buried for too long.
"Chloe." "Tell me again what you want. I need to hear it. What do you want?"
"I want to be me again. I want to feel safe."
There's a problem though. Brendan is the perfect male submissive and Chloe is not part of his D/s world. Brendan was in uncharted territory, pursuing someone who was not accustomed to his submissiveness.
Ah, there's an aspect of Branded Sanctuary that I truly loved! Tyler and Marguerite. They're making quite an impact here and it's a great pleasure to see them again. Chloe asked Tyler:
"Will you teach me how to use a gun?"
"Chloe." His voice had a rich timbre, flavored with a cultured Georgia drawl. "You take flies out of Tea Leaves in a cup. You apologize when you kill mosquitoes sucking blood out of your skin."
"I know, Tyler. I'm just so afraid...of being afraid, and I don't know how to stop."
"You're so very dear to us, Chloe. Give yourself time. If you still want to learn how to use a gun in a month or two, I'll teach you. But like most things, it's a decision best made when you're in the right frame of mind for it. Until then, I'll shoot anybody that needs shooting for you."
Tyler is such a gentleman.
"There are many things that men don't do any more that they should. Particularly for women."
Brendan talks to Marguerite about Chloe.
"The joyful Chloe still exists, but she's facing that dark side now. No one I know is more prepared than you to guide someone out of darkness, Brendan, because your own demons have never overwhelmed your light. An Arthurian knight in truth. You might best serve Chloe's needs right now by taking the reins. Show her how to drive the horse before handing them over. You understand?"
I truly admire Marguerite. This woman is so full of strength and wisdom.
"We place a great deal of emphasis on knowledge, understanding, comprehension," Marguerite continued. "But in a truly tolerant world, things don't always need to make sense to us to be accepted, or to become a vital part of our lives."
"Like the biblical fruit, the knowledge of good and evil. Kind of screwed ourselves there."
"Yes. Because understanding good and evil is intuitive, not scientific. We both know that."
"You learn to do without the walls, Chloe. The point isn't building them, but building a life that is so much of who you are, nothing can destroy it. If you're lucky, when you figure that out, you find - or discover you've already found - a person who will help you keep the darkness at bay. Someone who gives you the strength to live as who you are, not a prisoner of your own mind."
While the beginning didn't sweep me off my feet, I was truly wowed during the second half of the book! I so adore Ms. Hill's writing! Her gift to the reader is her philosophical and psychological aspect of BDSM. Her stories go beyond the sexual encounter of Dom/sub, and it is such a pleasure to read about the way she looks at BDSM. It goes so very deep and it is an enlightening journey. Always.
Chloe is not a natural Domme but she is an extraordinary young woman, someone in emotional pain, trying to regain control of herself. Brendan is the extraordinary submissive, someone who will help her deal with her pain, someone who will help her find the joy and laughter again. Brendan is full of compassion. Kindness. Strength. And full of blissful quiet. Trust and surrender is what all this is about. Those two elements are at the center of every relationship, and you don't have to practice D/s to understand that. Marguerite said to Chloe:
"Done the right way, Brendan will respond the same way to a command to give his Mistress a foot massage as he would to being whipped." At that astounding statement, she leaned forward. "Some subs need the restraints and caning to be fulfilled. But not him. How much D/s can or can't adversely affect a relationship has a great deal to do with the two people involved."
Brendan is quite unique, in that the most elemental level of his submission has to do with a woman's willingness to let him care for her, to do what it is she wishes and see her pleasure in that. And he needs someone who understands what his submissiveness is truly about. That's the challenge Chloe has to face, not whether or not she is a natural Domme.
Branded Sanctuary is NOT a book for readers who love to read about whips, chains and lots of physical pain. It was such a nice change for once because the BDSM elements are rather light. There's lots of romance, sensuality and eroticism. Further, there's so much kindness, gentleness and real depth palpable - it amazed me! I liked ALL the characters; they are complex and interesting. The Nature of Desire series truly gives me the feeling of family values. I'm not into this world either but when I'm reading Ms. Hill's books, I have a feeling like coming home. There's warmth, understanding and care.
Brendan is Chloe's sanctuary, the port in the storm, the ship she can trust. Brendan said to Chloe:
"Even then. I still want you. Heart, body, soul, everything from your deepest thought to your most casual gesture. I want to see all of it, be a part of all of it."
We think that subs must be weak. Obviously that's not true. There's real strength in Brendan's gentleness and kindness.

Joey W. Hill is a creative and inspiring story writer. "Branded Sanctuary" has a solid plot with strong character development and wonderful dialogue. This is a gripping story about pain and recovery. Chloe is a charismatic personality with a damaged soul you will enjoy getting to know and cheer her on as she begins to reclaim her life and looks toward a future without pain. There are many layers to Chloe which are revealed and which will invoke strong emotions in the reader. Brendan wants to help Chloe on her journey of recovery, a knight in shining armor. He is the ultimate good guy whose pleasure is defined by his gift to ensure the happiness of those around him. He is a sexual submissive who reveals his true nature in his caring and giving actions. Yet he is selfless to the point of frustration for Chloe who wants to know if he really wants her or is only seeking a new Mistress. This is a glorious romance which includes spicy and sensual love senses between the main characters. It also includes some graphic sex and BDSM senses. "Branded Sanctuary" is book VII in the Nature of Desire Series. I highly recommend everything written by Joey W. Hill. She is truly an exceptional story witch! - Michele
